All Africans currently in the minors come from South Africa. After giving the Australians a scare in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in February, these players reported to spring training with their respective clubs.
Gift Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: Indianapolis Indians (AAA)
Ngoepe, returning to the Triple-A team where he spent the second half of last season, was placed on the Pirates 40-man roster this winter. He’s hitting .224 with 3 stolen bases and 21 strikeouts in his first 49 at bats in 14 games.
Anthony Phillips, Los Angeles Angels.
Current team: Arkansas Travelers (AA)
Phillips spent the 2015 season spent outside of organized baseball after being released by the Phillies, but he signed this January with the Angels. The defensive specialist is hitting .186 with a .280 OBP through 15 games in Double-A. He has one double and one stolen base.
Dylan Unsworth, Seattle Mariners.
Current team: Jacksonville Generals (AA)
Unsworth has had three starts this season in Double-A, allowing earned runs in only one of them for an ERA of 1.15 through 15+ innings. He’s walked four and struck out 12. Unsworth split his season last year between high-A and Double-A Jacksonville.
