2009 in Review: Baseball European Cups and Qualifiers



Looking back at a few highlights in an eventful Baseball and Softball year 2009

European Champions Cup

For a second straight year the best club team in European Baseball was determined at a Final Four tournament in Barcelona, Spain. And again the winner was Danesi Nettuno. The squad, which later missed the playoffs in the Italian Baseball League, shut out the number one in Mister-Baseball’s European Top 50, Fortitudo Bologna, 1-0 behind 14 strikeouts in eight strong innings by Jeff Farnsworth. Bologna reached the final trough a 6-0 win over L&D Amsterdam Pirates, while Nettuno defeated Corendon Kinheim 6-4; both from the Netherlands.

Final Standings European Champion Cup:

  1. Danesi Nettuno
  2. Fortitudo Bologna
  3. Corendon Kinheim
  4. L&D Amsterdam Pirates

The four teams qualified for the European Champion Cup Final Four through two European Cups in Italy. Kinheim and Bologna took the first two spots in Matino. Amsterdam and Nettuno claimed first and second in Nettuno/Anzio.

European Cup Qualifier

24 B-Pool teams fought for a chance to get into the A-Pool at four European Cup Qualifiers in Ostrava (CZE), Trnava (SVK), Attnang-Puchheim (AUT) and Antwerp (BEL). MGPU-SYOS 42, KNTU-Osvsm, Bern Cardinals and Mannheim Tornados were the winners. Only Bern tried to win a spot in the 2010 European Cup for the Swiss champion, but lost in two games against Templiers Senart in the Playoff tournament in September.
