2008 in Review – Dutch Hoofdklasse – ADO

Besides looking back at 2008 in the Italian Baseball League, we’re also reviewing the year in the Dutch Hoofdklasse. A few weeks ago, we already did the same with the French Elite League and the German Baseball-Bundesliga.

ADO

ADO won just five of the 42 games during the regular season, finishing in eighth place. They needed five games in the relegation series against the EURO STARS to remain in the Dutch Hoofdklasse. Their performance this season was a big drop off in comparison to 2007, when the club from The Hague finished in sixth place with a 15-24 record.

What the stats say

ADO was out-scored 94-297 and barley made it over the Mendoza-line with a .200 team batting average. The pitching staff avoided last place in the league with a 5.23 ERA, good for sixth in the Netherlands in front of MR COCKER HCAW (ERA 5.28) and the MEDIA MONKS RCH (ERA 5.61). However the defense committed a league-worst 123 errors, which led to 95 of the total 297 runs allowed being unearned.

Alex Smith led the staff with a 4-9 record in 14 starts and a team-leading ERA of 3.79 (minimum 10 IP). He struck out 68 in 97 1/3 innings, walking 49. Southpaw Brent Henry (ERA 6.21, 1-9, 58 IP, 28 SO, 54 BB) had the other victory. The third regular starter Erik Remmerswaal had a 0-10 record in 13 games (ten starts) with an ERA of 6.16. Jeoffrey Groot had a solid year as the number one reliever with an ERA of 4.03 and 19 K’s (22 BB) in 44.2 innings pitched.

The offense not only lacked batting average or more important on-base-percentage (.269), but especially power (SLG .243), as the team managed just one homerun by Haily De Palm (BA .214) all season. Dave Steward, who batted .238 (SLG .311) led the squad with 24 RBI. Dimitri Leon (BA .182) and Ludwin Obispo (BA .246) had the most runs on the team with twelve each.

The club changed coaches during the off season and they hope to climb the standings next year. Besides new skipper Leo Voogd, they already brought in ten new players. Remmerswaal (retired), Henry, De Palm and center fielder Quensley Bazoer are among six, which have left The Hague.
